This week, October 4 through 10, is designated as Mental Illness Awareness Week in the US. Mental Illness Awareness Week was established in 1990 by Congress to support the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in their mission to increase awareness of mental illness. Every year during this week, NAMI and other mental health organizations host awareness events and campaigns to help educate the public about common mental illnesses, which affects an estimated 20% of the US population.

What is the Purpose of Mental Health Awareness Week?

Mental Health Awareness Week seeks to shed light on how prevalent mental illness is in our society. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in 2017. One third of those affected with a serious mental illness did not seek treatment. The main goal of this week is to help all of us recognize that mental illness is indeed a form of illness, and treatment is nothing to be ashamed of. During this week, several other organizations including the WHO have Mental Health Oriented Holidays including National Depression Screening Day on October 8thWorld Mental Health Day on October 10th, and NAMI’s own NAMIWalks National Day of Hope on October 10th.

How Does it Help Promote Awareness?

Every year NAMI creates a theme for Mental Health Awareness week. This year, the theme of Mental Health Awareness Week is “What People with Mental Illness Want You To Know.” Throughout this week, NAMI will be sharing their stories to help give those with mental illness a platform.
